Workshop: Abacus – Calculating in the Middle Ages
Do you know how people in Europe did calculations before the introduction of the Hindu-Arabic numerals and the decimal system? The workshop shows how moneychangers, accountants, and merchants did their calculations using lines and counters on a counting table, a so-called abacus. With the help of practical exercises the participants learn how to add and subtract figures like a medieval merchant.
