The Sculpture Collection
Sculpture, originally from Güttingen:
Mary and child, around 1500.
The museum boasts an
outstanding collection of Mediaeval wood carvings and altar retables, representative of the extant examples of such work
from the area of contemporary Switzerland during the Middle Ages, and thus of
international significance. Most of the collection was acquired from parishes and on the art market
during the early days of the museum, which helped to prevent the sale of
carvings to foreign collectors.
