The museum’s collection of arms is one of the most important of its kind, both nationally and internationally, thanks in particular to its core of objects from the arsenal of the canton of Zurich, which allows it to maintain to this day the character of a traditional civic armoury. Within Switzerland only the Old Armoury in Solothurn is comparable, while the National Armoury in Graz, Austria, is its sole competition abroad. On the occasion of its founding in 1891, the museum received from the canton of Zurich the historic arms and militaria collection of the Zurich Armoury, comprising some 12,000 objects and forming one of the pillars of the institution.
